Square Meal review of The Devonshire:
The Gordon Ramsay empire has expanded into Chiswick, refurbishing this sombre corner boozer in a tricky location some way from the High Road. A rushed renovation means the white paint job does little to offset the dark-wood panelling & overall sludgy-brown colour scheme, but the traditional pub grub-style menu is a rather brighter affair. Devilled lamb’s kidneys on toast was served medium-rare as requested, amply coated in parsley & a piquant reduction. To follow, braised Gloucester pig cheeks with mashed neeps was a gloriously rich treat, & if Barnsley lamb chop won no prizes for presentation, it was both crisp & tender. Less impressive were Dorset mackerel teamed with an underwhelming potato salad & nicely battered hake served with a stingy accompaniment of mushy peas. Puddings include traditional crunchy-topped crumble, chocolate sponge & pear frangipani, while the good-value wine list is rich on variety.
