During the summer, passers-by on busy Canonbury Road can see well-heeled locals in the dining triangle at the front of this neighbourhood gastro-bar. The quieter alfresco terrace at the side is a better bet. Inside, the dining room has linen-covered tables, & there’s a more laid-back bar area. Black & white portraits hang on the walls. The menu purports to be seasonal modern British, yet its influences are slightly wider. Chicken liver parfait with red onion chutney & brioche might precede spring vegetable & saffron paella, but there’s also fish & chips & shepherd’s pie. A fairly comprehensive wine list is helpfully grouped by style: ‘thirst-quenching & luscious’, ‘spicy & intense’. Though The House still receives some good reports, there’s evidence standards of both food & service have slipped, while prices remain fairly high.
