Square Meal review of The Peasant:

The Peasant recently changed its menu & having dispelled the global accent of yore, now stands firmly in the modern British camp. Bold flavours are evident throughout, from a starter of wood pigeon cassoulet with a rich, hearty broth to perfectly pink venison topped with a warm pat of Cropwell Bishop Stilton. A few dishes could do with refining: roast pollock would have been better without the crème fraîche that engulfed its Cabernet reduction, but this seemed like a minor detail when followed by a delicious bread & butter pudding accompanied by two jugs – one of cream, the other of warm caramel. Like the food, the surroundings have plenty of character, whether the circus-themed artwork in the upstairs dining room or the high Victorian windows & eclectic collection of antiques in the ground-floor pub.
