Square Meal Review of First Edition ?

Whitewashed walls & curtained booths in breezy deckchair stripes may conjure up dreams of Cape Cod, though the sight of suits quaffing white Burgundy should anchor you firmly in the Wharf. One of the last remaining ‘indies’ in the area, ‘informal’ First Edition makes a virtue of its status, doing what chains so rarely can. Staff ‘get to know you’ & respond to every need, whether it’s providing a good choice of wines by the glass or a meal that won’t max out cholesterol levels. Fish tops the bill on a fusion menu that’s ‘ideal for a client lunch’. Crunchy coconut king prawns with mango, grilled tuna, tandoori swordfish & salmon every which way are always popular, although there’s ample choice for veggies & meat eaters, too. Evenings can be manic, especially when the sun sets over the terrace.

First Edition is nice. But not mcuh more. It is simple, fresh, light and airy. With food to match – clean fresh menu that is ideal for something healthy or a client lunch. The seafood is not bad although there is sometimes a distince lack of atmosphere. In the evenings however the place gets very busy and the covered outdoor area is a nice spot to take in the sunset, especially in the summer when they sometimes have live music.

I booked a business lunch, fortunately with a client I have know for a number of years as the experience was dreadful. One guest, who is vegetarian, so ordered the tofu fish cakes, only to be told 15 minutes later that they were sold out.Two of the four guests ordered the tuna steak, both asked for medium rare, but the tuna was cooked to medium well so very dry. When we asked for a replacement tuna steak we were told that this was the last tuna steak so we could have salmon instead. We then ordered desserts only to be told that they had sold out on most desserts and had 1 pancota and 2 fruit mouse left. Granted we were lunching on a Friday and had a reservation for 1:30pm but would still expect them to have some food available. I just asked for the bill and will never return. To top it off the glass of white wine I ordered was warm. The coffees we bought from Starbucks in the square were fantastic.
