Square Meal review of Apsleys:
The latest of London's grand hotels to update its dining room, The Lanesborough's new restaurant is named after the Duke of Wellington's old home, Apsley House, over the road at Number 1 London. Given the historical tag, you might expect the cooking to be on-trend traditional British, but the kitchen is Italian. It's well-done stuff: smoked tuna salad with fennel, orange & dill kicks things off in a full-flavoured style that's maintained by a bold pasta course of red onion & ricotta parcels with Chianti sauce. To follow, veal sweetbreads with peas, broad beans & mint benefited from an admirably light touch, although an over-sweet raspberry semi freddo with chocolate sauce showed a less-than-deft hand. The cooking at Apsleys is notable, but it's let down by surroundings that are unlikely to tempt non-residents across the lobby: the muted atmosphere may be just the thing to soothe jet lag, but it's not going to set Londoners' pulses racing.
