The ‘Henry’ in question is Hampton Court’s most celebrated regal incumbent, King Henry VIII – although there’s nothing archaic about the ethos or the global cooking at this tourist-loving all-day eatery. ‘Sustainable’ and ‘eco-friendly’ are the watchwords – from the LED light fittings and walls made from reclaimed Farnham timber to the menus printed on recycled paper and the fish from certified sources. Starters of wild boar and thyme Scotch eggs with mustard mayo or crispy duck and watercress salad might precede veggie moussaka, rack of BBQ baby back ribs, lamb and date tagine or baked cod with stir-fried vegetables and lobster sauce topped with a poached egg. Wednesday night is given over to fish and chips and free-range burgers. Breakfast classics, mezze and salads complete the foodie picture, although the local credo also extends to wines and fizz from Surrey vineyards.
