Much has been said about the gentrification of Clapton, and trendy wine bar Verden goes one step further in consolidating those claims. Taking over a derelict pub, the updated interior draws on the more severe side of Scandi and Japanese design (all dark greys and black tones), although warm-hearted service helps to soften any stark edges. Food centres of various build-your-own sharing boards loaded with cheese and charcuterie, and there’s an inviting brunch menu featuring a terrific 10-ingredient club sandwich and plates of Ibérico pork hash with fried egg and jalapeño salsa. Wines span the globe, with ample selections by the glass and separate lists devoted to grape varieties and regions. Verden’s team includes the former maître d’ and chef from Mayfair high-roller Scott's, and it shows in the exemplary care and attention to detail across the board.
