Square Meal Review of Shoryu Kingly ?

Part of an expanding West End offering, Shoryu’s Kingly Court branch provides fuss-free Japanese cuisine for the Carnaby Street throngs. Communal benches, shelf-lined walls and a more intimate rear enclave set the scene in this lively eatery, which also comes suitably decorated with Japanese art. The speciality is tonkotsu ramen, a generous pork broth in an array of incarnations given theatrical monikers ranging from ‘fire and ice’ tsukemen (cold ramen with warm wasabi sauce) to the much-lauded Dracula tonkotsu. We found the latter bland and unworthy of the hype, but the popular ‘karaka tantan’ version delivers, with chiu-chow chilli oil spicing up fried minced pork. Steamed hirata buns are a moreish side, and the kitchen also turns out a selection of sashimi, gyoza and yakitori skewers. To drink, there's a saké list to investigate, along with shochu and Japanese whiskeys.

  1. Sometimes only noodles will do, even a cheap packet of instant noodles for me can satisfy an urge that I guess must be down to a comfort thing. As I sat staring at the menu in bewilderment in Shoryu Ramen‘s new outpost, I realised there’s a lot more to this noodle lark – the menu is a minefield. Shoryu is for serious eaters, there’s even a bulb of garlic and crusher provided on the table. This branch, the fourth in the empire is in Kingly Court just off Carnaby Street, which has become a real food hub with restaurants such as Whyte & Brown and the Rum Kitchen. Kingly Court used to be an old haunt of mine, back in the day when a Saturday was for doing whatever I liked. My sister and I would go just to visit the now defunct Candy Cakes when the area was full of over-priced boutique shops that no one went in. Luckily the chirpy staff helped us out with some recommendations, starting off, as always, with cocktails. My Golden Cherry Blossom £9 – Gekkeikan gold sake, Maraschino liqueur with a touch of cherry syrup was cordial light and deceptively non-alcoholic tasting...

  3. My second visit to Shoryu Ramen was at the brand new Kingly Court branch in Soho/Carnaby Street. We arrived at 1pm on the opening day and had about a five minute wait before being seated. As soon as we sat down we ordered drinks and were given the menu’s – excellent for a lunch time 1 hr food slot! Enjoying my Piri-piri so much last time I didn’t want to order any other… ok… I lied, I’d totally forgotten this is the one that I had previously write up HERE so I won't go into detail. I just fancied a good chilli kick and this took my fancy (yet again). Due to both of us being hungry and me wanting something a little extra, greedy piggy wig I am Mr E and I both had a hirata bun, pork for him, tempura prawn for moi. His pork looks delicious however lacked a little on sauce therefore making it a little bit dry and ‘claggy’ with the bun being steamed this can cause for tricky eating if there’s no sauce (the bun sticks to your teeth slightly – not attractive!)...
