Square Meal Review of The Convenience ?

The Cellar Door at Aldwych; Ginglik, Shepherds Bush; Attendant in Bloomsbury and now, The Convenience: these days, you’ll spend more than a penny in London’s old loos. Abandoned for over 20 years, this former public facility was a busted flush, but now it’s spruced up and pristine in utilitarian 1960s style. By day it’s café when ‘lovely local older ladies’ dish up soups and chowders, various savoury pies (chicken and tarragon, say), veggie ragoûts, ‘proper’ sarnies and homespun baking to go with an East End cuppa and a chinwag. After 5pm, the place morphs into a watering hole for Homerton hipsters, with the emphasis on locally sourced booze. Expect craft ales from Hackney, East London Brewing’s Orchid, punchy alcoholic ginger wine from Hawkes of Leyton, and London Glider cider ‘from the orchards of suburbia’ – Woodford Green, apparently.
