Square Meal Review of Salt’n Pepper ?

Something of a legend in its home country, this is the first London outing for Pakistan’s Salt’n Pepper group – founded some 30 years ago by renowned hotelier, restaurateur and food writer Mahmood Akbar. The main restaurant is done out in contemporary pastel shades with lots of natural light and fresh flowers, plus the bonus of a covered decked area for alfresco dining. Barbecued meats, grills and kebabs are one of the mainstays of the native cuisine and they feature heavily on the menu, alongside anglicised house specialities such as the SNP chicken club sandwich or a ginger and green chilli burger; also expect a good showing of baltis, biryanis, kormas and other curry-house staples. To drink, try a glass of shikanjabeen (mint-flavoured Pakistani lemonade). Weekday lunchtime platters (from £9.20) are tailor-made for Covent Garden’s shoppers, workers and tourists.

British curry houses in the centre of town are slowly disappearing (which in some cases is a sad thing), and being replaced with modern, contemporary Indian restaurants serving authentic traditional food. Us British are begging for new flavours at the moment and when it comes to value as well, Indian food leads the way - with Peruvian cuisine slowly following behind. I managed to squeeze in yet another mid-week meal and made my way down to Salt'n Pepper, just off Leicester Square. Salt'n Pepper is a Pakistani institution which is much loved by its locals. Established over 30 years ago, by Mahmood Akbar the chain has been going strong ever since. Princess Diana and Sir James Goldsmith are just a few of its celebrity visitors in the past...
