Square Meal Review of Uni ?

Among Belgravia’s backstreets, this split-level spot has a high-end feel with its marble sushi bar, striking graffiti-style mural, low-hanging red lanterns and stylish basement dining room – all brown banquettes, mirrors and discreet cubbyholes. Uni deals in Nikkei cuisine (a trendy mash-up of Japanese and Peruvian cooking) and the kitchen shows its credentials with flawless renditions of king crab tempura and deep-filled soft-shell crab maki. For some South American spice, dinky turbot tiraditos and lobster ceviche aren’t exactly served in king-sized portions, but they get the zingy flavours spot-on. Elsewhere, the eponymous uni (sea urchins) offer a rare treat for connoisseurs, while black cod in miso with Peruvian anticucho sauce is umami-smackingly indulgent. Just add carafes of saké and prompt, attentive service, plus good-value lunchtime bento boxes, and it’s easy to see why Uni is gaining a reputation among the local moneyed set.

    The largest Japanese settlement outside of Japan is in Peru and the unique fusion cuisine that is Japanese Peruvian is called Nikkei.Fiona invited me to accompany this time to discover Nikkei , she is an award-winning freelance writer and marketing consultant who currently writes about travel and London lifestyle for a number of publications and runs her own London lifestyle blog called London Unattached.   2. I recently started a new job in Victoria, an area jam-packed with mediocre chain restaurants and coffee shops. When I asked food friends for recommendations, Uni was a name that popped up more than once, with its salmon tacos singled out for particular praise. Taco shells filled with salmon tartare isn’t a dish I’ve ever come across before, so of course, I was intrigued. It turns out that although Uni takes its name from the Japanese for sea urchin, it’s not a straight Japanese restaurant. Rather, it describes itself as offering Nikkei cuisine, a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian food. Japanese food is enormously popular in parts of South America; indeed Brazil is home to the largest population of people of Japanese descent outside of Japan and Peru the second largest. My only reference for the term Nikkei was the Tokyo stock index but I’ve now learned that it’s also a term for American Japanese...
