Tucked away discreetly at the rear of Ian Schrager’s latest metrosexy, tongue-in-chic hotel, The Punch Room is an inviting low-key hideaway for quiet contemplation and interesting conversations by a blazing fire. With the Venetian blinds drawn, fumed oak walls, low lights and tobacco leather, the vibe is a cross between a private yacht and a modern Soho members’ club with slick service from laid-back staff who are chilled, jocular and professional to the core. As the name implies, the room's freestanding dispense bar is big on heritage punches, prepared for up to eight to share. The autumnal spirit-laced Oxford sherbet version, and a silky, milky collation that borrows from American bar legend Jerry Thomas’s original 19th-century recipe (arrack, Somerset cider, Cognac, rum, green tea, lemon, pineapple and spices) are both hunky-dory delightful. In short, this is the real deal.
