Following an expansion programme, Bishopsgate’s iconic Polo Bar has extended upwards, converting a pawnbroker’s office into more space for those seeking a Shoreditch Blonde at 4am – that ‘blonde’ as in beer, by the way. One of London’s few 24-hour licensed premises, this postmodern, rock-around-the-clock greasy spoon has been a hit with bookies, bohos, bankers and worse-for-wear stragglers in need of frothy coffee ever since Espresso Bongo was first screened in 1959. These days, they drop by for English breakfasts with Bloody Marys, eggs Benedict with Chapel Down wine, Caesar salad and Cristal Champagne (£225), salt beef sarnies and cider or carrot cake with a brandy Alexandra milkshake on the side. Also note Phil’s Office – a new, retro-styled private bar bookable for groups of party people any hour of the day, with the bonus of a film screen and karaoke too.
