The City’s fortunes are looking up. Could this be the thinking behind Andaz hotel’s new highfalutin fizz lounge with 70 Champagnes priced to suit its target clientele – from modest gains (entry-level flutes at £13) to full-blown bull-market bonanza bubbles? Bellinis are big at Catch, but there’s also a range of wines – or beer, should trading-desk screens turn to red. To eat, hams and charcuterie are carved on a vintage Berkel slicer, or you can pick from cheese boards, smoked salmon with horseradish mousse and caviar, crispy braised pork belly and other small plates. The decor mixes cool contemporary seating, beautiful Grade II-listed stained glass and clunky room dividers. DJs play next door until late, as punters down cocktails and more Champagne at Catch’s grand Victorian bar – lit like a Basildon nightclub circa Bananarama.
