If you’re on a first date, best avoid the unforgiving white light in the front section of Bird of Smithfield’s safe, solid and slightly suburban Lounge Bar. A more flattering perch is on a high stool at the softly lit counter, where you’ll discover sips such as vertically challenged – a rhubarb foam-topped Prosecco cocktail. Otherwise, order wine by the glass to go with assorted small plates (prawn cocktail, shepherd’s pie, monkfish cheeks with tartare sauce) or more substantial dishes such as burgers and fish-finger sarnies. In the chichi, 1950s Soho-style Birdcage cocktail lounge downstairs, it’s table service only for fancies created by the team behind Purl. The masquerade (a Bourbon and caramel vermouth idea) and an orange blossom/peach liqueur highball laced with thyme-misted Talisker whisky are two exotics that are likely to ruffle your feathers in a good way.
