Steeped in cocktail-shaking lore and infused with passion for its subject, the drinks list at Hawksmoor's City outpost is one for the connoisseur. Forget sickly chocolate martinis and embark on a well-researched ramble through the byways of alcoholic history, from Hannah Wooley's punch (recipe circa 1672) to classic ‘disco drinks' such as piña colada – made with Bermudan and spiced St Lucian rums, coconut sorbet and fresh pineapple. If the steaks don't suit, there are Marmite and cheese straws, short-rib sandwiches and lobster rolls for sustenance – or you can go for a Hawksmoor burger, made from 100 per cent Longhorn beef and depth-charged with nuggets of bone marrow. There's a hint of plain-deal wholesomeness about the bar's interior, but otherwise it has the same handsome proportions and air of enduring Edwardian solidity as the adjoining restaurant.
