Square Meal Review of Kêu! Shoreditch ?

Even in an area packed with Vietnamese delights, you can’t miss Kêu! with its bright, neon green signage & glass windows, giving you a peek of glistening, hanging meat, sleek interiors & colourful bottles of chilli & fish sauces, creating the mood for what Kêu! does best: banh mi, a sort of Vietnamese baguette. From the same stable as Viet Grill & Cay Tre, Kêu!’s team manages to dish out traditional fillings such as barbecue pork with coriander or xiu mai (pork meatballs in spicy gravy), but also introduces soon-to-be-favourites like the juicy & surprisingly filling Kêu! classic: pork belly with ham terrine & chicken liver pâté, all snug between crusty, fluffy baguettes. Although primarily a speedy takeaway service, there is also a small eat-in area. An ever-changing daily specials board features hot dishes, salads & crisp spring rolls, while Vietnamese coffee & fresh juice are also on offer.

kêu opened in 2012 and being only two years old, has taken the breakfast and lunch scene by storm! queues form all the way outside and the inside can get pretty packed out (it’s not a big place either). it’s part of the vietnamese kitchen group where you may know of their other vietnamese restaurants; cây tre in hoxton and soho & viet grill. the owners of these chains are very close friends of the family =) we ordered two different types of bánh mì (sandwich or baguette in vietnamese. it is also the word for bread – such a broad term isn’t it?) and shared it between us – the good ol’ half and half method when you’re in a relationship. i must say i love it! i’m always the type who wants everything on the menu and always extremely happy when someone else agrees to share a few dishes with me...

  2. A lot of my dining companions have a knee-jerk, irrational dislike of Shoreditch, but I like this misunderstood corner of London and one of the reasons is Keu. Located just across the road from the original Cay Tre, I’m fairly certain the two share the same owner. In any case, the banh mi are delicious. In all but one of my sandwiches, the baguettes were crispy and light – the odd one out was crunchier, but still far fluffier than many other baguettes here. All were packed with fresh coriander, fiery bird’s eye chillies and crisp, sharp vegetables...
