Square Meal Review of Les Deux Salons ?

Part of a celebrated stable that also includes Arbutus and Wild Honey, this buzzy but opulent brasserie started well, but recent changes to the menu (now pared back to lure in tourists) have drawn complaints in some quarters of ‘disappointing’ food. Comments about ‘lacklustre’ service are also a concern, though we found the staff friendly, prompt and efficient. The French culinary accent remains, but you’ll now see cheeseburgers and hot dogs on offer alongside andouillettes and steak-frites. Our lemon and garlic chicken was crisp-skinned and full of flavour, while Paris-Brest was exemplary, but signs of carelessness showed in the under-spiced chilli jam served with Cornish crab cakes and îles flottantes with unpleasantly thin custard. Pre-theatre/opera deals are a winning call, and the wine list is a real tempter with everything available by the glass or carafe.

  1. Les Deux Salons is one of those restaurants that are very decent. It does not boast heart-stopping food, the service is so and so but overall the experience is good – if a little bit on the expensive side. Apparently it is the third venture from Michelin–starred duo Anthony Demetre and Will Smith – which to me doesn’t mean a lot but I’m adding it to the post just in case anyone is impressed by the names rather than the actual venue and food. You will find it just off Trafalgar Square and I have to say that it is a space that’s very well done. I love love love the floor and the glass panels on the ceiling as well as the tables and comfy couches (I’m sure they are called something else). It conveys this feeling of old splendour which is slightly at odds with the mismatch of people – a combination of tourists, pre-theatre crowd and office workers. Not that there is anything wrong with any of that (I think we counted as tourists when we went) I’m just saying that I half expected everyone in there to be in their Sunday best...

    sexdrugsandbaconrolls :: Les Deux Salons

    We have noticed this place pop up earlier in the year and on later inspection, saw that is was the sister of sophisticated British restaurants Wild Honey and Artubus so we suggested to visit with friend. Les Deux Salon as the name implies is French so steers away from the British fusion of the other sister restaurants and instead moves to a more casual Parisian style Brasserie. Les Deux Salon is on a side street just off the Strand so is a great meeting location. The large windows have steel piping on the antiqued windows. We walked in to the grand restaurant and met at the desk to give our names and coat. We were shown to our table which was past the large old fashioned bar and in a slight alcove. We were seated at a crisp white table on a cushioned bench with wooden seats opposite us. The floor had tiled white and black stone and when one looked up there was a second floor with a large oval shape in the centre...

  3. What is on offer: The same people who run Arbutus decided to branch out into French bistro and they do it well. They were one of the first in the French bistro craze that has now taken hold of London. What was once a rarity in London is now a common dining option in London. Think Casse Croute, Little Social, Bouchon Fourchette, Bistrot Bruno Loubet, Brasserie Balthazar or Brasserie Chavot. Les Deux Salons more than deserves to be mentioned in the list of eminent French bistros in London...

  4. Les Deux Salons is nothing if not a handsome place with soft lighting, dark wood panelling and brass fittings. The upper level has the benefit of the spherical chandeliers forming a dramatic centre piece in the middle of the room. Service was quick and efficient on all four of my visits...

  5. Standing tall and proud in hectic William IV Street between Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden is Les Deux Salons. A typical Parisian-style brasserie that has proven itself to be a serious contender in the fierce market for both the tourist and local diners. Perhaps the reason why it has been able to kept-up trade since it opened in October 2010 is that it doesn’t rely on a mass of Press and PR hype to survive, unlike others. Instead, it actually delivers lovely plates of tasty food for excellent value for money which gets the punters in; a tricky feat giving the explosion in number of seats available for French bistrot dining in the city...

    samphire and salsify :: Les Deux Salons

    My parents and I needed a decent pre-theatre dinner so as Les Deux Salons is situated so close to most of London’s West End theatres, we decided to give it a punt. It has two sister restaurants, Arbutus and Wild Honey which both hold a Michelin star so expectations were fairly high ...
