With a decadent boho look that wouldn't go amiss in Hoxton, this self-styled 'pub & dining room' attracts both the local media crowd & Crouch End yummy mummies. DJs & cocktails rule on Fridays & Saturdays, while diners congregate for relaxed mid-week suppers & popular Sunday lunches. To start, a little pot of braised pig’s cheeks with chorizo & broad beans delivered a meaty hit, & Cornish crab linguine came with a buttery, tarragon-spiked sauce. Mains were similarly satisfying: slow-roast pork belly was served alongside rich garlic mash, while fish pie contained hearty chunks of smoked haddock & juicy prawns. To finish, mango & passionfruit pavlova provided a welcome burst of tropical sweetness. The menu is a mostly British affair, but France takes pole position on the wine list. As for the name, pop-trivia fans will spot that it’s lifted from an Echo & The Bunnymen song.

Went for a Sunday lunch here. First impressions were from the outside – we would have walked past but having read that it had been recently refurbished thought that we would take a look. We had roast lunch of beef and lamb which was excellent, both beef and lamb were tender and the roast potatoes and veg perfectly cooked and it came steaming hot. We had one starter of potted crab which was just ok, that came slightly warm which we thought unusual and tasted more of butter than crab. The Wine selection and price was very good and we had a very good bottle of claret. All in all a great sunday lunch, busy, good service, good atmosphere would return again and recommend it. The decor is rather eclectic but the staff and buzzy atmosphere made up for this. Have eaten in the Maynard and the food here is 100% better if a little more expensive.
