Cape winemakers Gary & Kathy Jordan are the guiding lights behind High Timber, but this new venue on the north bank of the Thames (with views across to the Globe) isn’t only an excellent showcase for South African vineyards, it also delivers great food. There’s an understated Cape feel to the place, though the menu offers a spread of contemporary, carefully sourced dishes with European overtones. Starters such as roasted scallops with apple salsa & sweet-cure bacon might precede a steak from Farmer Sharp with generous side dishes or loin of venison with braised haunch, peppered red cabbage & quince purée. In the basement is a more sumptuous private room with a glass wall offering views of the extensive wine cellars. Diners are encouraged to select their own favourites from the racks & bins. Thanks to knowledgeable, efficient staff, a meal here is an eminently comfortable & very satisfying experience.

Wine List: Don’t be fooled by High Timber’s concise list. Diners are encouraged to choose their wine from the restaurant’s extensive cellars, which are packed with South African bottles & a smattering from other countries. A highlight is the selection of Cape Winemaker’s Guild wines, only sold at auction. BEST BUY WHITE 2008 Jordan Chardonnay, Stellenbosch, South Africa, £28. BEST BUY RED 2004 Meinert Devon Crest, Devon Valley, South Africa, £35.

very good food and excellent food combinations, the variety of both fish, meat and vegetables was really interesting and the spicy scallops were perfect – there was both a full a la carte menu as well as reduced price fixed lunch menu. the south african wine selection was top class and the service excellent. apart from the restaurant on the ground floor they have a dining option in the basement which looks good for private parties. will definitely come again. it is tnot hat easy to find the restaurant and an extra sign on the main road with directions would be handy.
