Views of Bankside & the Globe are a real asset at this ultra-friendly, ‘wine dining’ establishment hidden away by the banks of the Thames. The sample wine list doesn’t give much away: instead of presenting you with a tome at the table, the owners prefer to take you straight to the cellar & help you select your wine from the 900 bins on offer. As you’d expect from a restaurant founded by Stellenbosch winemakers Gary & Kathy Jordan, half of the wine selection is South African, with France & Spain making up only 20% & 15% of the list respectively. As for food, it’s an ‘excellent place for steaks’ & other red-blooded dishes, so look for ox-cheek bourguignon with smoked mash or calf’s liver with borlotti beans as well as prime cuts of grilled Cumbrian beef (with sauces & dressings ranging from bordelaise or bone marrow to biltong butter). Starters might bring flashy foie gras & chicken liver parfait with blood-orange jelly, while desserts could feature chocolate fondant with air-dried banana & banana ice cream; also check out the bespoke cheese room.
