Square Meal Selections

Square Meal Review of High Timber ?

Views of Bankside & the Globe are a real asset at this ultra-friendly, ‘wine dining’ establishment hidden away by the banks of the Thames. The sample wine list doesn’t give much away: instead of presenting you with a tome at the table, the owners prefer to take you straight to the cellar & help you select your wine from the 900 bins on offer. As you’d expect from a restaurant founded by Stellenbosch winemakers Gary & Kathy Jordan, half of the wine selection is South African, with France & Spain making up only 20% & 15% of the list respectively. As for food, it’s an ‘excellent place for steaks’ & other red-blooded dishes, so look for ox-cheek bourguignon with smoked mash or calf’s liver with borlotti beans as well as prime cuts of grilled Cumbrian beef (with sauces & dressings ranging from bordelaise or bone marrow to biltong butter). Starters might bring flashy foie gras & chicken liver parfait with blood-orange jelly, while desserts could feature chocolate fondant with air-dried banana & banana ice cream; also check out the bespoke cheese room.

Despite its excellent location and great menu, the quality of the food did not meet expectations. The red wine sauce with the bavette steak was tasty but the plate was swimming in it, leaving the diner feeling a little overwhelmed by its richness by the end of the meal (and we love rich food). Portions were incredibly small, even by London standards, and there was definitley no feeling of value for money – this isn't fine dining after all.
To finish off a poor meal, we ordered the warm date pudding, envisaging lashings of sticky sauce and a moist, chewy cake, only to get a Mr. Kipling size slice of what looked like dry madeira cake, but was drier and burnt on the bottom. We left the burnt half on the plate, which is a rare thing in our family. On informing the waiter of the charred dessert we were told that the chef had been informed (although I'm assuming he was already aware when he took it out of the cake tin). There was no real apology and no offer of removing the offending item from the bill, which at £7.50 was not cheap. We said nothing further and promptly left.
Overall we left the restaurant feeling distinctly unsatisified and will not be going back.

    Excellent for steaks!

Ate lunch there yesterday and rate the place very highly. Made to feel very welcome and the staff looked after us very well, especially as we ended up staying for a considerable amount of time.

Menu is geared towards African meat eaters and the steaks were fabulous. Good wine list and also has a cellar offering a range of top notch South African reds.

My only gripe would be to get another few signs about telling you how to find the place.

    Will definitely be going back.

very good food and excellent food combinations, the variety of both fish, meat and vegetables was really interesting and the spicy scallops were perfect – there was both a full a la carte menu as well as reduced price fixed lunch menu. the south african wine selection was top class and the service excellent. apart from the restaurant on the ground floor they have a dining option in the basement which looks good for private parties. will definitely come again. it is tnot hat easy to find the restaurant and an extra sign on the main road with directions would be handy.
