The Thames is contained behind embankments here, but there’s no question that it’s a divide mentally as well as physically, allowing Putney to flourish as a destination rather than a passing point. Its links with the West End and The City are not just via the bridge, though; there are mainline and tube stations allowing for an easy commute around London. The restaurant-going public tends to be slightly younger than further out of town, and the restaurants and bars cater to them differently – expect a more urban selection of gastropubs and tapas bars as well as a pretty cool collection of proper restaurants. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs on Putney heath, or for proper atmosphere, take a stroll along the embankment to watch some of the many boats fight against the tide along the stretch of the river that is globally recognizable as the course of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.
