Best Restaurants - Chelsea - WinnerThe restaurant that “has it all” still towers above its many imitators – a world-class trendsetter that is as “sleek” and “cool” now as when it opened 12 years ago. Amid a beautifully crafted interior of polished granite, steel, blond wood and glass, celebrities mingle with jet-setters, sushi chefs glide effortlessly around their open-plan kitchen, and city boys top up girlfriends’ flutes at the glitzy bar. Behind this polished frontage is a menu that left one reader “speechless”. From the most humble dish – a sticky, meaty grilled eggplant with miso – to luxurious seared Wagyu sirloin tataki with black truffle ponzu, flavours are as explosive as they are immaculately balanced. Sushi is a must, especially the lip-smacking dynamite spider roll with softshell crab, while the robata grill can turn even the likes of asparagus with wafu sauce into an art form. You will need “deep pockets” but in return you can expect first-rate service, some of the best saké in London and a feeling that you are dining with the A-list. It’s “just a special experience” – and one well worth repeating.

Rainer Becker German chef Rainer Becker had an international career working for the Hyatt Hotel Group for 14 years, including six in Japan at the hotel made famous by Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation. He rolled into London in 1998, consulting at Hakkasan and opening the Rib Room, before launching the Zuma and Roka brands with his business partner Arjun Waney. In 2013, he also hit the heights with Oblix at the Shard.
