SquareMeal Review of Two Fat Ladies City Centre

Bronze Award

The Two Fat Ladies have come a long way since opening their original gaff in Glasgow’s West End, and now boast a mini empire in the city (and beyond). This outlet on Blythswood Street is plush and contemporary (think wavy lines and metalwork), and the combination of bright staff, a buzzy vibe and modish decor with fantastic fish create one of city’s most animated eateries. A starter of seared scallops with Stornoway black pudding and apple purée sets the tone, while mains bring anything from whole plaice with almond, orange and parsley butter to Shetland salmon with beetroot purée, pickled mussels and chives. There are steaks and game for meat eaters, while desserts such as passion-fruit cheesecake or dark chocolate ganache with cherry coulis are guaranteed to put a smile on your face – likewise the short, well-priced wine list.

About

First opened in 2005, this intimate restaurant was the first site for the Two Fat Ladies restaurant group, which then expanded in 2007, taking over the site of long-standing Glaswegian restaurant The Buttery.

At this branch, now known as Two Fat Ladies City Centre, you can expect to be greeted by a compact and cosy dining room which hints at the seafood themed menu from the moment that you walk through the door. The dining room may be flooded with natural light, but it takes its inspiration from the dark depths of the ocean, featuring eye-catching motifs of sea life and coral reefs along the walls, as well as metal work on the windows which mimics fish moving through the ocean’s waves. There is banquette seating which runs along one side of the room, while regular tables are flanked by high-back stools wrapped in a brown leather finish.

On the menu at Two Fat Ladies City Centre, you will find an all-day offering which kicks off with brunch from 9am. Start your day off on the right foot (or should that be fin?) with the likes of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toasted sourdough or eggs benedict served atop a toasted English muffin. At lunch and dinner, the menu evolves to welcome more hearty offerings, mostly focused around seafood but with a few international flourishes too.

Fish courses to enjoy include pan-fried sea bream with lemon and chive sauteed new potatoes, or pan seared scallops with sage butter, roast pumpkin puree and a parmesan cream. Other main courses meanwhile include an indulgent mac ‘n’ cheese topped with pancetta or a Thai seafood salad featuring king prawn and squid, plus a medley of tongue-tingling spices.

To round off your supper, you can treat yourself to one of the Two Fat Ladies desserts - think a rocky road chocolate brownie or a spiced apple and walnut cake.
