SquareMeal Review of The Turf Tavern

First-timers may struggle to find the Turf Tavern, hidden away in a maze of back alleys, but you can count on plenty of tourists, dons and students making it in before you. Currently known for its rich history as much as its impressive range of ales and charcoal-heated beer gardens, the Turf dates from the 13th century but, while its winding grounds and warren-like rooms contain a section of the original city wall, its biggest claim to fame may be as Inspector Morse’s local or as the place where Bill Clinton ‘didn’t inhale’. Food focuses on sarnies, burgers, pies and chips with classic stodge for afters, alongside the odd exotic option (salmon with lobster sauce or Thai curry) – although that may be immaterial, given the extreme difficulty of bagging a seat.
