SquareMeal Review of The Swan at Southrop

Bronze Award

Set in a 17th-century village inn, The Swan has a simple motto: ‘home grown, homemade’. Thus, seasonal produce inspires the menu, with ingredients coming fresh from the Southrop Manor Estate’s farm every day. The restaurant is a jumble of open fires, exposed wooden beams and cosy corners, providing a snug and homely atmosphere. Yet despite the pub’s distinctly British attire, its oft-changing menu has an Italian and international outlook. To start, braised rabbit ragu with hand-cut pappardelle was rich in flavour and generously meaty. ‘Asian-style’ sprouting broccoli salad with sesame, cashews and nam jim sauce was a refreshing assembly, offering just enough of a spicy kick. The kitchen’s strength lies in its baked goods, where freshly made breads and desserts such as the rhubarb puff pastry tart are highlights. To accompany the food, a small but refined wine list features a solid selection of Old and New World options. In all, a quintessential, and delightful, countryside experience.

About

The Swan enjoys a lovely position adjacent to the village green in Southrop. Dating back to 1606, this former bakehouse is now a cosy and inviting pub and restaurant serving seasonal British dishes with a contemporary twist.

The Swan is decorated in a traditional style complete with roaring fires, wooden furnishings and comfy, inviting seating. The garden room offers a more open space for dining. During the warmer months, there is also a patio area which is perfect for al fresco dining, drinks and socialising with friends and family (and the dog is welcome too, of course).

The Swan boasts a menu of quality British fare and hearty favourites, from tasty homemade pies to generously filled Longhorn beef burgers, fish dishes and stews. You might start with the likes of cod's roe and fried almonds, or country terrine and pickles. While mains include confit duck, kohlrabi and apple slaw, as well as steak and chips.

For those visiting on Sundays, there is a traditional Sunday lunch menu on offer which includes roast pork and beef, as well as a vegetarian option. All roasts are served with Yorkshire puddings, vegetables, greens and gravy. If you have any room left for dessert, perhaps you'll go for the sticky toffee pudding served with ice cream, or the selection of local cheeses served with sourdough crackers.

Perfect for families, The Swan is also a great place to gather and socialise, with many popular sporting events on show. You can also catch fireside live music at The Swan, as well as local events and exhibitions.

Children, families and dogs are all welcome at The Swan, but if you're dining with younger guests, you can ask the team to see the cygnets menu for child-friendly plates.

Outstanding meal – clearly one of the classiest places to eat in Cotswolds. A place that knows about food and how to serve it.

The starter of broad bean and pancetta with goats cheese was very bland., the beans hard and the cheese hardly melted. The chicken caeser salad with chicken wings was sickly and the parmesan crisps were burnt. The fresh fish sat on a bed of vegetables and was smothered in olive oil, and that was all you could taste. A very hushed atmosphere, you felt everyone was listening to your conversation. This restaurant came highly recommended, but felt very let down by the overall experience. A nice setting, but not worth the drive.
