Square Meal Review of The Pond Café ?

Looking out over a pretty lily pond in the village of Bonchurch, this bijou sibling of The Hambrough in Ventnor has heaps of charm and an alfresco terrace for long sunny lunches. Following a change of ownership, the kitchen has moved away from its familiar Mediterranean themes and now majors on more creative contemporary dishes – from an on-trend starter of cured mackerel with salted peanuts and cucumber kimchi bursting with bittersweet flavours to a rich dish of presa ibérica with Swiss chard and pastrami oats invigorated with freshly shaved pear. Foraged ingredients (including the ubiquitous local wild garlic) are also put to good use – witness plaice with samphire, or roast chicken with sea kale. Isle of Wight cheeses and spot-on desserts such as a huge peanut butter macaroon are also worth exploring.
