SquareMeal Review of The Montpelier

Boozers with built-in movie houses are a rarity, but this popular Peckham pub is one of the exceptions: its ‘back room cinema’ is big enough to accommodate 30 popcorn crunchers with £3.50 tickets to see new-release DVDs of every ilk. Still on a cultural theme, The Montpelier also exhibits local artists’ work and hosts live music, performances and quizzes. The bar’s decor subscribes to the current vogue for mixing sober Victoriana with 20th-century disposable, while Sambrooks and Meantime head the London draughts alongside Cotswold lager, cider and a fair wine list. Relying on quality local suppliers, the kitchen’s strength is in contemporary pub classics: whitebait, falafel and hoummos burgers, seafood risotto, wild venison, roast organic chicken, veggie toad-in-the-hole and mum's favourite puds. If you like what you see, The Montpelier’s sister pubs are The Roebuck and The Trinity, both in Southwark.
