SquareMeal Review of The Ivy Café Wimbledon Village

Silver Award

Guided by owners Caprice Holdings, The Ivy is taking over London one painfully-chic eatery at a time – including this ‘casual’ Wimbledon Village café, where the full menu of modern brasserie classics is offered. Glamorous golden art-deco interiors and seductive lighting transport you back in time. Combine this with a strict no-photos attitude and you’ll be questioning the restaurant’s definition of casual. Nevertheless, prawn cocktail with creamy avocado (reinventing the 1970s starter) tasted wonderfully fresh and tangy, while a decadent truffle arancini was appetisingly cheesy. Portions can be overpowering, with a chicken Milanese (succulent and egg-topped) filling the plate. An equally sizeable sirloin was melt-in-your-mouth tender. To drink, the crowd-pleasing wine list includes a refreshingly fruity Château d’Esclans. Although the intensely rich dishes might make you feel you need a workout afterwards, prices here are reasonable, service impeccable – and you get the chance to act like you’re hiding from the paps.

About

This Wimbledon Café is a gorgeous addition to the Ivy cache that has been impressing punters for years with its lush interiors and excellent renditions of the brand’s classic dishes. It is well-positioned for punters coming fresh from an invigorating walk on the common, and well-heeled clientele making their way to and from the local theatre.

Wimbledon is an impressive postcode, so it is only fitting for the area to have a beautiful café to dine within. The all-day dining affair boasts starters of yellowfin tuna carpaccio and ever-popular truffle arancini – truffle does tend to be a theme of the luxurious menu.  Buffalo mozzarella and lobster risotto are an equally exciting way to whet your appetite before you move swiftly onto the mains. The mains are hearty, traditional Ivy fare such as roast chicken and a pan-Asian inspired blackened cod fillet.

Punters should also take a look at the cocktails and wine lists, which are replete with stunning concoctions and European imports. The Ivy Royale or the margarita Valencia featuring Olmeca Reposado tequila, Grand Marnier, winter spice, fresh OJ, and a dash of bitters make an excellent choice for cocktail hour. Speaking of which, the café also does a smashing weekend brunch, a decadent (and boozy if you like) affair of eggs benedict galore. For carnivorous punters, the steak selection is sublime and rather generous too – with cuts such as sirloin, fillet, rib-eye, and more.

Sweet-toothed patrons will be delighted with the dessert menu as well, with decadent plates of apple tart fine and crème brulee on offer. Chocolate aficionados may want to order the chocolate bombe, served with a hot salted caramel sauce and a honeycomb centre. The Wimbledon Ivy café doesn’t just serve up great food, the interiors are a treat to take in too. The décor is luxurious and fun, with vibrant pops of colour splashed around the plush furnishings.

Lovely food and atmosphere. Will be back

I booked The Ivy Cafe to celebrate my mothers birthday. Everyone enjoyed their food and the derives was okay, had a few minor issues but nothing too big to leave a negative lasting effect. It's so close to home so will be back. Only lasting negative was the table we were seated at was abit small for 5 people. If everyone got a main, a side that comes on it own plate/bowl and a drink, it would have been very busy on the table.

But overall, I would go back but maybe not as a large group if they don't have the space for us.

Poor menu, poor food
I can't remember seeing such a meagre à la carte menu. There were very few choices and what was there was uninspired. My wife and I both plumped for the blackened cod, which seemed the most interesting option. My fish was not fully cooked, although my wife reported hers was OK. It was a pretty mediocre dish anyway. For pudding I ordered an apple tart but was told it would take 20 minutes; so I abandoned that idea. My wife ordered a blackberry sundae, which turned out to be huge; so I did get a bit of that, although it was mostly just vanilla ice cream and a lot of whipped cream, my wife having eaten the small blackberry sorbet and the couple of fresh blackberries. I have to say though, the accompanying shortbread biscuit was very nice! I'm afraid the experience didn't amount to much as a birthday celebration. What's more, it was rather over-priced but then that's what you expect in Wimbledon Village.

Ambience aplenty and warm atmosphere but disappointing on special dietary requirements. Was assured by Manager when booking on phone that most dishes on the a la carte could be adapted but upon arrival it was limited to the usual plain items - gravadlax, steak etc. However, there was a welcome flourless chocolate cake which was delicious.

Game Set and Match to The Ivy
Beautifully decorated for Christmas, the Ivy stands out in the heart of Wimbledon Village. We visited in early December; very friendly staff, excellent service, everything on menu was appealing. Friendly hubub rather than noisy. The four of us chose Dover sole, Duck Curry, fishcakes and Shepeherd's pie. Generous helpings to the point where each of us were almost defeated....puddings were superb - Chocolate bombe and a wonderful apple tarte flamed in brandy. Two courses were plenty three would have been too much. Fischcakes and Shepherd's Pie perhaps slightly on the dense side so visit with a big appetite ! Classy but relaxing atmosphere in the signature art deco style. This will be more than a restaurant just for locals.

Overall it was a very good experience, but as only opened recently there are a few points that need to be addressed. Not good to be left outside while the reception check with other personnel about table....could have been raining!! Most of the staff are trained and and have a very confident and professional outlook but some need more guidance as you get the impression of nervousness... White wine left in ice bucket away from table and consequently had to 'catch the eye' of serving staff. But will definitely dine again and recommend ....just teething problems at moment but during the next two weeks of Wimbledon you will be put to the test....Good Luck and I'm sure it will be a great success.
