About

In the backstreets of Sandwich sits this little gem of a pub. It oozes charm and character, with its sun trapped picturesque courtyard where you can enjoy a quiet pint choosing from the many different guest ales we have to offer. The pub has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, whilst also being a lively place to dine, with great traditional food being served with a modern twist. The outstanding food is complemented by excellent service from friendly and informative staff.

Hearty fayre and craft beers put the 'filling' into Sandwich
Overwhelmed by the countless pubs dotted around Sandwich, we booked the George and Dragon for a post-amble meal. Sounds of merry-making floated along the Medieval streets as we approached the ancient, hobbit-sized door. Briefly fearing a Wicker Man-esque standoff, we crossed the threshold into the pub; thankfully, there was nothing of the sort, and we squeezed our way through the jolly locals towards the bar. (Viewers of Gogglebox may spot the programme’s resident toffs knocking back a tipple or five here). There was no room to loiter or lean but thankfully our table was ready early, so we took our drinks straight to the restaurant area at the back. This space was kindly lit and overlooked a dainty courtyard outside, while service was friendly and efficient as water and warm bread appeared alongside the menus. Most dishes carry beer recommendations, which is a bonus given a, the hearty fayre goes hand in hand with a pint and b, there's an enviable bevy of craft brews to try. Drivers beware as several - particularly the Trappist numbers - are extraordinarily boozy. (A bottle of Belgian ruby Rochefort 8 was 9.2%, but tasted nowhere near that strong). My partner and I ordered in unison, initially sharing a starter because our B&B’s owner alerted us in advance to the hefty portions. We were relieved to have listened, as the chorizo hash was more akin to a main in size. It was pleasant enough, but a glug of sherry vinegar would have added pizzazz. Then onto the second piggy treat of the day: pork chops as big as my head served with sharp apple sauce, sweet braised cabbage and exemplary crackling. The meat was well cooked, but the massive hunks of protein defeated us both (despite a day’s energetic rambling). With no space for pud - or further pints, for that matter - the evening came to an end all too soon; thankfully we left before the meat sweats set in. It’s worth grabbing an aperitif elsewhere (particularly if you want seating and space) and booking here well in advance to beat the golfing hoards. In short, good grub with a neighbourhood feel, but skip lunch and designate a driver to make the most of it.

Sorry, you cannot spend SquareMeal vouchers here yet.
