SquareMeal Review of The General Burgoyne

In a previous life, this handsome, whitewashed inn was a Lakeland drinking den, complete with flagged floors, open fires and beams. Young owners Craig and Louise Sherrington have spruced it up, keeping lots of original features and adding a crowd-pleasing menu. Craig’s time spent at Michelin-starred restaurants has brought considerable clout to dishes that offer more than your standard pub grub. You can still order fish and chips or cracking Sunday roasts, but there’s also plenty to interest those with a curious palate: maple-glazed chicken wings with smoked bacon and spring onion risotto is a terrific opener, while goats’ cheese bonbons with home-dried tomatoes, mizuna and pine nut salad hits the veggie bulls-eye. Elsewhere, roasted chicken breast with sautéed gnocchi, sweet potato, sage and watercress salad is a sophisticated, generous plateful, and Craig also loves a good pudding; his rhubarb sponge with orange jelly and cardamom-tinged honey ice cream is a must-have.
