Squaremeal Review of The Gardener's Cottage ?

Once the resident gardener’s cottage attached to Edinburgh’s Royal Terrace Gardens, this B-listed building is now home to a rustic, enterprising eatery dedicated to seasonal food. Communal tables, Sunday school chairs and paint-splattered floorboards set the tone in the come-as-you-please dining room, or you can sit outside among the greenery. Dinner is a no-choice, seven-course menu (check Facebook or the restaurant’s website each day for details) with the emphasis is on “inventive, locally sourced and seasonal food”, hints of British heritage and influences from faraway lands: pine-cured halibut with crab mayo, ash-baked turnip and apple butter; asparagus with quail’s egg and onion ‘petals’; hogget with stuffed pepper and smoked mushrooms; seeded sponge with lovage mousse and linseed; pear and hazelnut crumble with mascarpone and chocolate cream. Lunch is a simpler carte and there’s weekend brunch too (think meatloaf brioche sandwich or Arbroath smokie with eggs) – plus a smart little wine list with easy-going prices to match the food’s unbeatable value.

The Boozy Bunch :: The Boozy Bunch The Gardener39s Cottage an enchanting Edinburgh eat

There’s something endearing about that name, isn’t there? The Gardener’s Cottage. Something that conjures up thoughts of cabbage patches, cosy fireplaces and Enid Blyton books (or maybe that’s just me!). Well that’s something akin to what we found here. I was following my colleagues along a particularly green Edinburgh street, face buried in my scarf and shoulders hunched against the piercing wind, chastising myself for wearing ballet pumps without socks around Scotland in December, when there it was.
