Square Meal Review of The Don Restaurant ?

Vibrant art by leading British abstract painter John Hoyland brightens the interiors of this elegant Square Meal reader favourite. The Don occupies the old Sandeman port premises, tucked discreetly into a courtyard close to Bank. The setting is surprisingly intimate, whether you dine in the Old Restaurant with its double-height wine tower, or the airy White Room where a 15ft Hoyland abstract is displayed. “Lovely food” might mean a starter of cauliflower velouté, its flavour piqued by Tuscan shaved truffle; or carpaccio of smoked Orkney Angus beef with celeriac rémoulade. Sea bass fillet with curly kale, sorrel cream and seaweed beurre blanc could follow, or perhaps haunch of Suffolk venison with spiced red cabbage, chestnut and celeriac purée. Service is “excellent”. In a nod to the building’s former owners, the “top notch” wine list includes 80 ports and 15 sherries, as well as at least 16 wines by the glass.

Private Dining at The Don Restaurant

The Don’s stunning brick-lined and vaulted Sandeman Room was originally a bottling cellar for port and sherry shippers. It seats 20-24 guests and is perfect for intimate, atmospheric dinners. This room is also available for group breakfasts or drinks receptions.

The Bistro is another of The Don’s converted wine cellars, exuding olde-worlde atmosphere through its vaulted brick walls and arched ceiling. Its cosy banquettes seat 30-40 comfortably; there is also a small private bar for pre-dinner gatherings.

The Old Restaurant was The Don’s original dining room when it opened in 2000. A light, airy space thanks to its five huge courtyard-facing windows, The Old Restaurant features a stunning double-height wine tower and original John Hoyland artwork. It seats 30-45.

The White Room seats 40-62 people and features two original John Hoyland paintings and a wine wall. The Wine Study is available for pre-dinner drinks receptions.

The Wine Study is a semi-private room that can seat 14-18 guests around one boardroom table. A stunning wine wall separates The White Room from the Wine Study.
