SquareMeal Review of The Brownlow Arms

This wonderful stone inn wears its country house-style well. The oak panelling & grand stone fireplaces topped with enormous beamed lintels sit beautifully with the winged chairs & regency stripes. A gentle hubbub of chat emanates from the central bar & drifts through dining rooms filled with antique furnishings, period prints, autumnal coloured fabrics, shuttered windows & large gilt mirrors. The owners work tirelessly, pleasing the crowds with their flexible attitude to eating. It’s a well-tried formula, mixing old pub favourites with restaurant classics, delivering fresh, good quality food that places emphasis on locally produced raw materials. So expect dishes such as ham & leeks with Lincolnshire Poacher & cream, followed by rib-eye steak served with shallots, armagnac & cream, while good old-fashioned puds are just what you would expect, with chocolate brownies & steamed sponges typical choices on the dessert menu. The wine list works its way downwards from smart French classics to everyday gluggers.
