Square Meal Review of The Blind Pig ?

‘Blind pig’ is a Prohibition-era euphemism for a speakeasy, and this wood-panelled saloon above Jason Atherton’s Social Eating House looks sophisticated and handsome in its own way – picture a butch copper-topped bar and low-key, old-school styling. Broadly speaking, the switched-on cocktail list also walks the walk – despite some rather “lame” names. Anyone for Robin Hood, Quince of Thieves (Somerset cider brandy, quince liqueur and mead with a ‘mini apple bullseye’), Rye ‘n’ Air (Pikesville rye, Campari, peach brandy, anise, sweet vermouth, grapefruit oils, ‘cabin pressure, duty paid’) or Cuba Pudding Jnr (Havana Club rum, raspberry, Grand Marnier, stem ginger and yoghurt powder)? Nibbles come courtesy of the Social Eating House kitchen, where Atherton’s protégé Paul Hood has devised a menu of ‘bites and jars’ – think salt cod brandade, duck rillettes and chorizo hot dogs.

    Positioned next to chef Jason Atherton’s Social Eating House, the Blind Pig is the upstairs ‘secret’ cocktail bar of the venue. If the name, the location and door of the bar do not spark your curiosity or raise an air of mystery about the venue, walking up the stairs you can read a quote on a brightly lit red sign, by Lord Alfred Tennyson’s poem ‘The Eagle’, “He watches from his mountain walls, and like a thunderbolt he falls.’ By the time you enter the speakeasy, the team behind the Blind Pig ensure you are intrigued, and to think that they haven’t even offered you a drink.
