SquareMeal Review of The Black Boy Winchester

This seemingly ordinary, black-&-white backstreet pub is a real gem. Its warren of dark, higgledy-piggledy beamed rooms is crammed with a riot of oddball memorabilia including everything from stuffed animals, clocks (none marking time), old signs, posters, cartoons & poachers’ traps to a large safe; there’s even a book-filled library & an old-fashioned scullery-style room complete with an Aga & a sink. In keeping with the rustic theme, the kitchen also keeps it simple. Get stuck into homemade soups, doorstep sandwiches & big-hearted pub grub such as beer-battered cod, burgers, toad-in-the-hole or shepherd’s pie, & expect plenty of chips – whatever you order. Five locally brewed ales remind you this is a proper boozer. Related to the Michelin-starred Black Rat across the road.
