Square Meal Review of The Alchemist ?

Manchester fixture, The Alchemist, takes on the City of London. The vast, high-ceilinged lounge here is dominated by a monumental, eau de Nil, back bar cabinet, reminiscent of Fortnum’s rococo displays. Similarly elaborate, The Alc’s (too-long) 50-strong cocktail compendium takes some reading. Novelty and theatricality abound. Pick of its newly created cocktails, listed under the title Molecular Madness (groan!) is The Colour Changing One, which thanks to vodka and apple liqueur, does as it says. Refillable hip flasks, soda syphon mixes and punchbowls are fun, but grown-ups will admire barrel-aged Corpse Reviver and the Smokey Paloma, served in a heebie jeebies-inducing hospital-style flask. At £6.95 for chilli and mint Daiquiri, prices are northern enough, but will Mancunian flummery bedazzle blasé Londoners?
