Dinky Sushi-Say is often rammed, so booking ahead is wise. It might not look much from the outside, but for over 20 years this unassuming restaurant has been many people’s first choice for stonkingly fresh sushi in the capital – despite the fact it’s in Willesden Green. The proposition is simple enough: sushi prepared at the front counter, with diners seated on stools or at wooden tables at the back. There are hot dishes too, but it’s the sushi that wins the day. Run by a husband-and-wife team since day one (he wields the knife, she waits on tables), Sushi-Say offers little by way of decorative adornment, but that doesn’t seem to matter to its fans. Expect thick slices of sashimi on wooden boards, pert maki rolls, gyoza, wicked soft-shell crab tempura and lots more besides – and drink saké until the staff eventually have to ask you to leave.
