An interesting addition to Brighton’s increasingly idiosyncratic dining scene, Sunny is one of the only UK restaurants to serve up dishes from China’s Guangxi province. Hearty examples include
spare ribs steamed with potatoes or a warming stew of braised beef brisket, cooked for six hours with Chinese radish. Other star attractions include exotic three-cup chicken, named after the three
cups of fragrant spices that scent the meat, & a dish of vinegary ‘Old Friend’ udon noodles. The kitchen also seems to have a knack for Szechuan dishes – its spicy beef in a scarlet soup of
chillies & red peppercorns is peerless – and more conservative eaters will be satisfied with more mainstream Thai and Chinese options. Rock bottom prices & smart, if low-key interiors make
what is effectively an oriental cafe, an interesting culinary detour.
