Square Meal Review of Stovell's ?

Fernando and Kristy Stovell’s classy little restaurant is becoming quite the dining destination. The former farmhouse dates from the 16th century and mixes gnarled beams, mullioned windows and low ceilings with deep-pile carpets and crisp white tablecloths. Cooking jumps from the unashamedly elemental – vine charcoal that grills aged Lake District beef rib to a crisp turn – through to the complexity of grilled loin, crisp rack and pressed confit of rabbit served with fermented turnips, chickweed purée and lentil sauce. Influences are many, so Cornish brill might come with grilled leek, langoustines and toasted quinoa, or venison carpaccio with jalapeño, raw mushroom and ponzu dashi mayonnaise. For pudding, try a light-as-air hot chocolate mousse offset by pumpkin ice cream. Smartly suited, just-so service is effortlessly friendly and the wine list is a keenly priced, globally driven selection. The well-stocked bar also features barrel-aged cocktails and gin distilled on the premises.
