SquareMeal Review of St John's Tavern

Bronze Award

The good folk at the strapping St John’s Tavern make no bones about their dedication to the food side of the operation – this is a pub of the gastro variety, with a retro finish, where the triumvirate of rustic tucker, cracking real ales and European wines keeps the punters happy. The Victorian-era space with its generous proportions is ideal for hosting both casual drinkers and full-on diners; shabby-chic decor confirms the everyman appeal. The kitchen’s repertoire, listed on blackboard menus, is grounded in British cooking, yet looks to the European mainland for further inspiration. Provenance is an evident watchword. Kick off with grilled herring with pickled tomato, or a classic fish soup, and then dive into English rose veal chop with wild mushrooms, or lemon sole with a Mediterranean spin. Puds have the same Brit/Euro mash-up, and Sunday lunch will warm your cockles – especially if you sit by the open fire.

This isnt just a tavern full of incredible booze - this is an education on how to enjoy the best  food in the most comfortable surroundings. There is a wide range of mouthwatering options that present ground breaking gastro ideas from pheasant pappardelle to smoked haddock and mussel chowder. The show stopper would be the oysters. Carlingford rock oyster to be precise. Seriously good and definately surprised at the quality considering the amamznig price.

A wonderful haven of good food, excellent service and calming atmosphere

My sisters and I were heading to a sad family meeting at a nearby hospital and decided to meet for lunch beforehand. I am so happy we came across the St. John's Tavern. As soon as we stepped inside we were met with warm hospitality and professional service. We didn't try the wine but the lunchtime menu and food was superb. The mackerel burger is something to write home about alone and the chips are the best in the world!

The atmosphere was a great combination of relaxing and professional and in no short time we were reminiscing, smiling and laughing. This was the perfect place for us to relax, chat, laugh and even shed the odd tear.  We will be back when we have more time to enjoy this lovely gastropub and it's very flavoursome food.

Another local. It has been a fixture in North London for many years and it still delivers. The menu always offers something interesting, and the food is well cooked and presented. Sometimes the service comes with a little attitude, but overall a very good gastro pub with a great atmosphere. Update Feb 2010 First time back since the refurb. Have never had a bad meal here.

We go to St John's quite frequently, being locals… We always like our food and drinks and have been generally happy with the service until a recent visit: Recession, recession… we started adding up our restaurant bills – but even before checking our bill at our latest visit, we were surprised at the rather high final amount that already included 12,5% service charge… We were over charged by £11 for our meals, that consisted of a £5 starter and two main courses – not a difficult one to add up! After pointing it out to our waiter, although we felt rather awful, we did not get even an apology, yet alone a drink on the house… It was weird and uncomfortable – We won't be rushing back …
