“Even after 10 years it still produces the goods,” declares a fan of Sam Harrison’s commodious day-and-night joint, set within a new business centre in a one-time paper factory. The urban space with its cool bar and easy-going brasserie isn’t just for hip office workers, though, as evidenced by its proper family-friendly approach and egalitarian attitude. Breakfast, brunch and a juice bar cement the venue’s status as a foodie hub for the local community, and there’s even a takeaway option. In the brasserie – where musicians regularly play at weekends – the main menu lists feel-good dishes such as Nashville hot chicken with the house coleslaw, alongside the more restaurant-like roast hake in a Med-style combo with Jerusalem artichoke purée and olive tapenade. Wind up with lemon posset and raspberry marshmallows. We like the bar here, too: it’s the real deal with fashionable cocktails, bottled craft beers and a variety of spirits.

Louis Roederer Wine List of the Year 2014The winner of the Neighbourhood Restaurant List of The Year in 2013, Sam’s showed strongly again. This list is simply laid out – just Whites, Reds, Fizz, etc – but it’s clearly done, with plenty of helpful, characterful tasting notes, a powerful by-the-glass selection, and the added focus of Wines of the Month. The judges found it hard to argue with Dom Pérignon 2003 at £139 as well… ‘Clean, minimal and spot-on for an urban bistro, there’s lots to like about this list,’ said Studio Alto’s Neil Bruce, who was on the judging panel.

Private Dining at Sam's Brasserie & Bar

The mezzanine floor is for dinners for 18 to 26 people, open Monday-Friday for lunch and dinner Sunday-Thursday. The whole restaurant and bar can also be hired for exclusive use on Sunday and Monday evenings throughout the year. The restaurant can host everything from corporate events to wedding receptions and birthday celebrations. The head chef, Ian Leckie, works closely with the guests to design a bespoke menu which can be as diverse as drinks and canapés or full 3 course dinners.
