With branches in Westfield Stratford, Spitalfields and Soho, this mini-chain of fairly priced Thai restaurants has become a favourite with tourists, shoppers and young groups looking for a quick
bite and friendly service. The latest branch, hard by Carnaby Street, has a quirky, modern feel, with 3D-effect flooring, pale-wood tables and pillar-box red stools, plus lamps spelling out the
restaurant’s name in the main dining room. Staples such as meaty fishcakes or som tam (green papaya salad) pack an authentic chilli punch, although the standout dish is juicy lamb cutlets in a mild
yellow curry enriched with coconut. Elsewhere, 15 additional specials indicate that this site is the flagship – try the crisp-coated squid curls or melt-in-the-mouth morsels of venison in a
fragrant pepper sauce. Desserts are notable by their absence, but portions are generous – so an aromatic jasmine tea should suffice.
Back to the here and now. Carnaby Street on a wet, cold and windy late December evening doesn’t exactly conjure up images of the Andaman sea lapping the white sandy Phranang Cave Beach. But Rosa’s Thai Cafe‘s exterior had that warm, welcoming glow that just seems to pull you in. Once through the door our welcome was quick and efficient, maybe a little too direct and hurried – then again this is a cafe and turn around has to be fairly fast. The waiter motioned to us, pointing to a small table near a little drinks/prep area, ‘Two. Here!’ He said and ran off to deliver the bill to another table...
