What was the Chinawhite nightclub has been dragged into the modern era as Libertine, with this distinct lounge included in the package. In fact, ‘modern’ currently translates as circa 1929 and,
yes, Reason & Mankind fancies itself as another speakeasy – although its 1950s Mad Men-style interior suggests a tiki lounge minus the kitsch trappings. The bar majors on whimsical
cocktails served with a gimmicky twist: silver needle (a creamy gin martini) comes with an big fat syringe filled with tea and bitters, while salt of the earth (Tequila, palo cortado sherry and
caramel tea) is meant to be taken with a salted caramel ‘snuff box’. The props, sadly, are more memorable than the drinks they accompany. For something more convincingly theatrical, try Rosita’s
fire water (a bitter, smoky mezcal negroni) produced from under a top hat in a cloud of smoke.
