The Pitchford’s covetable Georgian manor house on the outskirts of Faversham is the perfect small country restaurant-with-rooms – unassuming and unpretentious. Inside, all is cosily domestic,
although details such as delicate tulip-shaped wine glasses and a refreshingly restrained menu suggest serious culinary intent. For more than three decades chef/proprietor David Pitchford has honed
his own version of modern Anglo-French cooking, relying on top-drawer ingredients and faultless expertise to deliver the goods. The seasons matter here, with pickings from the manor's own walled
garden, local game and fish from the quayside at nearby Whitstable and Hythe deployed in harmonious ways. Whipped goat’s-milk curd, for example, is embellished with pickled beetroot, toasted pine
kernels and a dressing of late-picked Muscat grapes, while loin of venison keeps company with baby spinach, pickled Brogdale pears, honey-roast parsnips and walnut croquettes. ‘A great experience’,
chimes one fan.
