SquareMeal Review of Vietnam House Restaurant

Originally a tiny cubbyhole of a place, Edinburgh’s first Vietnamese restaurant is still a cosy, family-run outfit with refreshingly basic, unpretentious trappings. Botanical artwork, portraits and colourful woven placemats create a casual vibe, the soundtrack is pure pop and the food is spot-on. Bowls of fragrantly garnished pho (noodle soup) are the headline act, but the menu also embraces other Vietnamese stalwarts including spring rolls, fishcakes, zingy salads and more substantial offerings such as stewed beef with mooli, carrots and herbs, or stir-fried chicken drumsticks with lemongrass and chilli. To drink, try aloe vera juice, lotus tea or Vietnamese coffee, made the traditional way with condensed milk. Prices are ‘shockingly low’, and the restaurant adds value with its BYO policy for beer and wine (£1.50 corkage). The owners also run the Vietnam House Gallery on Haymarket Terrace.
