Handy for the nearby university, this small and unassuming café is easy to overlook for 11 months of the year – but not in August, when it’s bang opposite the temporary Edinburgh Fringe venues
erected annually in Bristo Square. The interior is brightly fitted out with colourful fabrics, yellow walls, decorative plates and knick-knacks – although the folksy Anatolian kitsch hasn’t been
overdone. A welcoming vibe prevails, and the kitchen deals in hearty home-cooked flavours. All-day breakfasts come in various international versions, or you could stick with bagels, omelettes,
pancakes or porridge, backed up by fruit smoothies for the healthy brigade or assorted cakes and pastries for the sugar junkies. The more interesting mains have a Turkish flavour – chicken shish
kebab, lamb koftas, mezze or vegetable moussaka – although you can get burgers, baked potatoes, sandwiches and salads too.
Last week my family arrived to spend a bit of time in the UK and to see me graduate after many years in academia. On my graduation day, they didn’t want to get too far from McEwan Hall and I needed somewhere to get them lunch where they could sit and chill while I picked up my gown and such.
