Square Meal Review of Nopi ?

You don’t have to be a Guardian reader to have a thing for Yotam Ottolenghi, master of swoon-worthy Middle Eastern and Asian flavours. This gorgeous spin-off from his Ottolenghi deli chain serves myriad obscure ingredients in the “zingy, mouth-watering combinations” that have become his trademark. Glossy “in a posh souk way”, the gleaming all-day brasserie is done out in shades of white and gold – rather like the cover of Yotam’s cookbook Plenty. Sharing is encouraged, bills can add up and not every dish works, but there is much to rave about as “wild flavours” jostle for attention: shakshuka (brunch only); twice-cooked chicken with lemon, myrtle salt and chilli; burrata with blood orange and coriander seeds; Valdéon cheesecake with pickled beetroot and thyme honey. ‘Natural’, ‘orange’ and ‘volcanic’ tipples all show up on the thinking person’s wine list.

    London Grump :: Nopi, Piccadilly

Nopi is allegedly named after its location, just North of Piccadilly. It’s the latest (and maybe greatest) restaurant from the now fairly famous Israeli Chef Yotam Ottolenghi, a chap known for the vibrancy of his food, and big, bold flavours.

Inside it’s all glitz and glamour and polished gold accents, with blinding white tiles completing the look. Undoubtedly an absolute nightmare for their poor cleaners...

  1. I am predisposed to like NOPI. Partly because it’s on the site of the Sugar Club, of blessed memory and partly because I have a soft spot for all things Ottolenghi. And for all you young things out there, Sugar Club was, for me the food sensation of the mid 1990′s. It’s a combination of Middle-eastern and Asian, with modern, voguish ingredients, a decent wine list and strong flavours.

This is the grown-up side of the café that is Ottolenghi...

Wrap Your Lips Around This :: NOPI

NOPI is what you might imagine the light at the end of the tunnel to lead to, a heavenly waiting room of sorts. Pure white walls are diffused in a golden glow, such that the overall feeling is of a floating space unencumbered by hard lines and corners. Bars are marble topped, fittings are brass, and tables are neatly laid with white paper covers – the stage is set.

A blank canvas is the ideal backdrop for owners/chefs Ottolenghi and Tamimi to showcase their hybrid cuisine. Both chefs grew up on opposite sides of Jerusalem, one on the Jewish west side, and the other on the Palestinian east. It is in London...

Munch My Way :: Nopi, Piccadilly

    Home
Nopi is owned by celebrity chef Yotam Ottolenghi… Here the food is inspired by his roots where the main food is inspired by the mediterranean region and the middle east.

This time I want to experience his all day, I would say flagship, restaurant.. Today I’m here for breakfast, so then let see how it goes…

FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: NOPI, Dec 2013

What is on offer: Yotam Ottolenghi is one of the most respected chefs in London and NOPI showcases his creativity, eye for detail and impeccable sense of flavour combinations. The service was a bit slow when we visited (20 mins wait between dishes), but still overall a very enjoyable experience...

The Gluten Free Foodie :: Nopi: Ottolenghi I

Having recently experienced the seasonal deli delights of Ottolenghi's in Islington, I was very excited to hear about the opening of his more formal restaurant, though they call it a brassiere, Nopi.

What a beautiful place. It reminded me of a greek toga. All white with little gold trimmings. So peaceful, calming and luxurious, this would come pretty close to what a brasserie in heaven would look like.

I was presented with a gluten free menu (white with a touch of gold, naturally), with that day's menu on...

The Little Brown Book :: Nopi

It's happened again. The team behind Ottolenghi have produced another gem and helped my taste buds maintain a level of refinement that my budget is finding harder and harder to comprehend.

    Anyway, welcome to Nopi...

  1. Nopi opened in Soho in 2010 to a great reception, and rightly so. It was an extension of the Ottolenghi chain of delis by Yotam Ottolenghi who is famous for his uniquely innovative blend of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian cooking. Nopi gave Ottolenghi a presence in Soho, but it also made his delightful food accessible to a wilder audience.
I visited Nopi in June 2011, several months after it opened and loved it (you can read that post here). Little has changed in terms of the restaurant’s décor or design. Nopi is split over two floors. The ground floor is white throughout with individualised tables, and...

Yotam Ottolenghi

The darling of the chattering classes, Israeli chef (and qualified pilates instructor) Yotam Ottolenghi is best known for his veggie-biased Guardian column and his hugely popular Middle Eastern cookbooks. He came to London in 1997 to do a PhD, but was distracted by a Cordon Bleu cookery course that eventually led to Kensington Place, Baker & Spice and his own restaurant/deli group, Ottolenghi. His higher end offering, Nopi, followed in 2011.
