Chef/co-proprietor Kevin Mangeolles made his name at the Michelin-starred George Hotel on the Isle of Wight before decamping to north Norfolk, & he is continuing to shine at his latest venture.
As you might expect, the food here is overtly ambitious & Mangeolles makes inventive use of top-notch local ingredients for a range of exciting dishes: a grilled mackerel starter is accompanied
by compressed watermelon, horseradish cream & crab salad, while a main course of English rose veal comes with cauliflower purée, deep-fried calf’s tongue & wild mushroom sauce. For dessert,
opt for poached peach with peach mousse, raspberry sauce & mango sorbet. The 18th-century coaching inn is still basking in the glow of its 2007 facelift (think New England meets old Norfolk),
with muted colours & evening candles adding a romantic feel to the elegant dining room; there’s also a laid-back bar, & the bedrooms are lovely.
