Square Meal Review of Nanban ?

Two years after winning MasterChef, American-born Tim Anderson is putting the finishing touches to his first restaurant – a Japanese eatery specialising in the regional cuisine of Kyushu Island, where he lived for two years. The name means ‘southern barbarian’ (a term once used to describe European settlers) and the cooking is all about ‘dirty’ flavours, with lots of pork and noodles – ‘Japanese soul food’, if you like. Judging by some of the ideas that Anderson has been trailing in his warm-up gigs, visitors to Nanban can expect the likes of mentaiko yaki-onigri (cod roe cured with chilli) and soy-marinated mackerel kak-ae, plus four kinds of regional ramen noodles at knockdown prices and various Anglo-Japanese desserts ranging from traditional cakes to Mr Whippy ice creams flavoured with roasted green tea. To drink, beers from home and abroad should suit the food.
