Square Meal Review of Mr Cooper's House and Garden at The Midland Hotel ?

A worthwhile revival of a grand space, Mr Cooper’s is Simon Rogan’s second eatery within The Midland hotel, and a relaxed alternative to The French. Styled as a garden, library bar and clubby leather study, it’s more characterful than most, with striking, nature-worshipping art lending a distinctive feel. Chef Gareth Jones cooks a menu that swerves away from the expected all-British path, taking in everything from chicken wings glazed with pomegranate molasses to a Greek meatball recipe Rogan learned from his first boss – here topped with tzatziki foam and served with jammy baked apricots. Cumbrian rib steak with truffle pudding and latkes rewards those who shun adventure, while halibut baked in a cabbage leaf with broad beans is a great idea. The original Mr Cooper, whose garden on this site was much admired by Mancunians back in Victorian times, is now honoured indeed.

  1. It’s been a good year for the Midland Hotel. This iconic hotel in the heart of the Manchester city centre is now the city’s most decorated dining destination with Simon Rogan’s Mr Cooper’s House and Garden, the sister restaurant to the flagship The French recently being awarded two AA Rosettes. Add to this the three AA Rosettes the French (read my review here) already holds, and you have a food lovers paradise. Simon Rogan has definitely delivered on what he was brought into do – to turn The Midland Hotel into a Manchester landmark.

    SilverSpoon London :: A night at Mr Cooper

    Mr Silver and I used to know Manchester very well as he went to university there and I have a good friend from just outside the city, but now we haven't been there in years. So I asked my virtual friends on twitter for their recommendations for premiership restaurants up north. Specifically, I asked Mrs Petticoat, who has a fabulous blog commenting on restaurants in Manchester, London and the rest of the world.

    Mr Cooper's House and Garden was the resounding answer, and one backed up by other tweeters. So of course, I booked it!

    The restaurant derives it's rather odd name from the real Mr Cooper,...

    Foodographic :: Mr Cooper

    A visit to L’Enclume and a chat with Simon Rogan, who was already considering an outpost in Manchester at the time, convinced Mike that he’d finally found a man who understood his vision - he just had to agree to throw in The French to seal the deal.

    Simon Rogan told me that, despite his love of English heritage dishes and the purity of foraged and home grown ingredients, this larger restaurant gave him an opportunity to create more internationally inspired dishes. The name ‘Mr Cooper’s House and Garden’ reflects his back to basics starting point approach. Before becoming the location for this giant terracotta...

    Nomface :: Mr Cooper

    It seems like most of the Manchester bloggers have visited Mr Cooper’s House before we finally did last week. The restaurant is really funky yet stays in line with the heritage of The Midland. It is named after Mr Cooper whose house and garden sat on the site back in 1819. There is a big tree in the centre of the restaurant to reflect the garden and a wall of live herbs were growing as well which I thought was pretty cool...

Simon Rogan

The control centre of Simon Rogan’s mini-empire is the Cumbrian village of Cartmel, where, in 2002, the Southampton-born chef opened his world-class restaurant L’Enclume. Rogan now has his own farm nearby, which produces obscure heritage ingredients for his highly innovative cooking. In 2013, Rogan branched out, launching The French and Mr Cooper’s House & Garden in Manchester’s Midland Hotel. A year later, he opened Fera at Claridge’s, and further projects are in the pipeline.
